Every once in a while, a new Italian restaurant opens in Beirut; it’s as if Lebanon is competing Italy in the number of pizzeria’s available.
Regardless of that, trying new restaurants is one of the things I like most; the new experience each one promises (whatever the outcome might be) is worth the try.
So it is shortly after Pizza & Co.  opened in Beirut Souks ( Downtown), that I decided it’s time to give it a try.
The place was a bit crowded, which is supposed to be a good sign.
As we stepped in we were greeted by a hospitable waiter who asked us to wait a second as he checked for a place for us to sit. Meanwhile, I took in the surrounding.

The place was so simple, yet as simple as it was, it was pretty elegant. Where the nearly eight chefs (all dressed in white) cooked was within sight of the customers, and the oven (or if you want to call it a fire place here) was so artistically designed; it was a pleasure to look at.
Small mosaic tiles, red in color, decorated the entrance to the oven; the small tiles went up towards the ceiling, getting lighter in color as they went up; such that if you looked from a distance it gave a nice view of a mix of orange, red, yellow, beige and brown; I loved the architecture of this, so warm and relaxing. A flame-like glass decorated oven!

The walls were covered by classic black and white tiles, which reminded me of old kitchens;  despite that, I thought that the change from colorful to black and white was so sudden and should have been made in a smarter way.

Back to our waiter, who comes back and leads us to a small table, flanked by two other tables with a few centimeters between them. Literally a few centimeters, leaving no space for private conversations where your voice and the voices of the people surrounding you all mingle to create a musical atmosphere of letters and words floating in the air. (I even forgot if there was actual music played in the background)
“Are we supposed to be this close to one another?”
The waiter smiled as he replied: “Well, that’s the whole idea of our restaurant”.
Then I got it and I even enjoyed the idea more; Italy’s a place where family is a holy issue, especially among gangs. Mario Puzo in his bestseller classic, The Godfather, says that a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man. That’s why everything was so crowded; to resemble a huge family gathering and probably to bond people more.
On your table sits a paper (written on it: Watch out, this is going to be messy) on top of which is a clean white plate with a napkin, on which “Sauce Remover” is scribbled.

Then comes the moment we are all waiting for: The Food.
The menu doesn't have that much of options; a limited types of pizzas, pastas and appetizers. Some were the usual ones you may find in any restaurant, others were house-specific.

I chose a weird pizza plate and another weird pasta one and the wait begins.
Meanwhile- and as all Italian restaurants- during the wait, you entertain yourself with freshly baked bread and delicious olive oil (comes in a spicy version or the classic one).
The serving was pretty fast; our plates arrived quickly and they were such a pleasure to look at.
The pizza had asparagus, broccoli and zucchini in it covered with melting cheese. The dough was so delicious and mildly chewy. One of the best I have tasted in the region.

All what you had to do is to sprinkle some olive oil on top and take your first bite.
With each bite, you experience a new flavor, for not all three ingredients are present at the same time in one bite. I fell in love with it, everything was so perfect in it (maybe because I love broccoli and asparagus I fell for it, the zucchini was a bit risky to include but it was delicious none-the-less).
One of the best mouth-watering vegetarian pizzas I ever tasted.

Then comes the Pasta.
The pasta wasn’t that ripe, as Italians claim that good pasta is a half cooked one. It was drenched in white creamy sauce, covered by thin stalks of asparagus and on top, a sprinkle of herb which I forgot its name. The pasta was so good; the combined taste of asparagus mixed with light cream and the herb was so unique and new.
However, I have tasted better pastas in another place; it misses something, can’t tell what it is, but it needed something intense to balance the mild taste that dominated the plate.

Regarding the prices (As we Lebanese say, now we are talking business), it isn’t that cheap; the price range is between 25000 L.L to 50000 L.L. depending on what you choose (our pizza was for 24000 and the pasta for 30000) which is slightly similar to the other new –born Villagio. The pizza, I believe, was worth every penny.

Lastly, I can’t judge a restaurant by just tasting two of its plates, but all what I can say is that Pizza & Co. was a nice experience; it’s worth a try to Italian food lovers and well worth a second visit to try out the rest of the menu.

I am 165 cm tall...
Two years ago, my weight was 67 Kg and I used to consider myself as Fat....
One year ago, my weight was 60 Kg and I went to a nutritionist because I couldn't loose any additional kilogram and I thought an organized diet will do me good...
Now, my weight is 57 Kg ... I still feel very shy in swimming outfit and I feel guilty every time I eat more than the required calories...
In two years, I lost 10 Kg BUT I didn't gain any confidence in my body shape... And if you want to know how it feels. It hurts!

I know I am not an alien, and that a huge number of people all around the world face low-self esteem. Eating disorder and Anorexia are dangerous maladies and they are invading our societies.
A real model!

This new body-standards are being popularized by fashion brands that design their clothes on emaciated-until sickness mannequins and by women magazines that don't miss a chance to teach us "how to look thinner".

La Perla, new mannequin!

Women, have we ever consider how many trends are exploiting our low self esteem to make fortunes?
What would happen if women wake up some day feeling very confident about their look?
Such a strike will bankrupt thousand of companies.

Feeling fat is an illusion, it is an invention that is limiting our capacities, squandering our thoughts and making us a "copy-paste object".

I know how hard it is to fight all these implicit massages that encourage us to be thinner in order to look beautiful, I always promise myself that I will not fall down again on this media trap and I always end up "feeling fat" after a while :(.

I wish one day  I will look at the mirror feeling satisfied with my body!

"Girls, embrace your flaws. Don't compare or compete with others. What makes you different, makes you beautiful. Don't let the crowd's standards define you. You're beautiful in your way."

Who doesn't like to eat great meals for less prices?

No body right? however, this is not what Cornell University reported after a study conducted on 139 costumers of an Italian restaurant. Offering the same open buffet but with two prices 8$ and 4$, costumers who paid 8$ enjoyed the food 11% more than the costumers who paid 4$.

Costumers where asked to evaluate their experience , and give three ratings for the food throughout the course meal ( first, middle and last taste). Even though the two groups ate the same amount of food overall, People who paid less reported "feeling like they had overeaten and more guilt about the meal" and they also reported " liking the food less and less throughout the course of the meal".

We were fascinated to find that pricing has little impact on how much one eats, but a huge impact on how you interpret the experience” said Brian Wansink, If you’re a consumer and want to eat at a buffet, the best thing to do is eat at the most expensive buffet you can afford. You won’t eat more, but you’ll have a better experience overall.”

It's fascinating to know that just by increasing the price our satisfaction of food will increase as well !

Shawarmanji is one of the newest trends in Lebanon, a place where the famous Shawarma is worshiped and treated as well as it deserves.

If you like this Sandwich you will know exactly what I am talking about. Before Shawarmanji, eating a Shawarma was an adventure by itself, some kind of an impossible mission . Few places prepared Shawarma and even fewer were the ones that made it as good as Shawarmanji does.

All Shawarmanji Branches are small and well designed. It is not a typical Lebanese restaurant in contrary it is very similar to the worldwide trends of fast food. When you walk in, you can see clearly that this place is copying McDonald or Burger King. you order you food , pay directly and wait to pick your order (self -serving.)
Food comes wrapped in cartoon boxes and papers, all prepared to match the theme of this place (No glass plates, no steel fork and knife).
The open kitchen gives you an impression on cleanness. The adorable shape of the two "Sikh al Shawarma" chiken and beef prepared in front of you , increase you appetite.

In addition to the original Chicken/ Beef Shawarma Sandwich, Shawarmanji offers a large menu of new inventions:
-Carmalaized Onions BeefManji : Beej Shawarma +BBQ Sauce+ caramelized onion + Coleslaw ( to be honest, I have never tried this shandwish. I am usually a chicken lover when it comes to shawarma)
-Light Style BeefManji : Beef Shawarma+ light yogurt (instead of the garlic paste to make it lighter) + grilled tomato +onions +parsley (very good for the calories counters, not that much delicious but I consider it as acceptable )
-Carmalaized Onions ChickenManji: Chicken Shawarma +BBQ Sauce+ caramelized onion + Coleslaw+ french fries (one of the best! very unpredictable)
-Coleslaw ChickenManji: Chicken Shawarma +Coleslaw+french fries. (this one is served with a different kind of bread, I would have preferred if Shawarmanji used the original Bread, it is more tasty and familiar to us)
-ShakerManji: Shawarnanji master piece. A box of mixed ingredients with a Meyo garlic sauce on the side. served with no bread just to enjoy the unique taste of shawarma.
-CauliFlower: a modest Shandwish of Fried Cauliflower +lettuce+tarator+ french fries.
-FriesManji: a special kind of fries offered with a mixed of tasty spices.

This is what we ordered :)

Shawarmanji's desserts are very delicious as well, my favorite is the Chocolate Halawa.

Shawarmanji is one of the best currently. It offers delicious food with a very good quality.
When it comes to the Price/Quality/Quantity, I feel it hard to judge. All Shawarma rolls are for 5.500 LL in exception of the caramelized and the coleslaw ones  for 6.500 LL.The Cauliflower Sandwish is served for 3500LL .
I find the Shawarma rolls and the cauliflower sandwich prices as acceptable but I am not sure about the ShakerManji. It is served for 10.500LL, which is almost equal to 2 Shawarma rolls.

This place changed the concept of Shawarma and made it more casual. My only objection is with the delivery service. Food comes half the time cold and the service is very slow. I tried more than once to tell Shawarmanji staff about this, but they didn't really show a great concern. In a case when most food places would offer me a dessert to compensate the cold delivery, Shawarmanji staff kept silent.

In no time, this place owned a great reputation and it is now spread all over Beirut with 9 different branches.
  • Hamra: Junction of Main Road, Estrale Center, 01-746546
  • Ashrafieh: Hekmeh Main Door :01-334934
  • Sin El Fil: Main Street: 01-488455
  • Zalka: Main Highway: 04-721922
  • Kaslik: Main Highway: 09-222344
  • Badaro: Adlieh, Damascus Street: 01-616888
  • Elissar: 04-928301
  • Verdun: 01-801399
  •  Le Mall Dbayeh: 04-523876
Shawarmanji, you have earned a rating of  3.25 stars.

CBJ is one of the places that you cannot visit only once, because the moment you cross its doorstep, you will fall upon its spell.
It is not an ordinary restaurant with a large menu of tasty burgers. It is a place where you feel home. The staff is always very nice and welcoming, the atmosphere is very warm and happiness is spread all over the faces as if they sell you smiles with each burger J

I have tried almost all CBJ Burgers, and my top two are “Swiss and Mushroom Burger” and “Juicy Lucy Burger”. Every burger is served with coleslaw or green salad and French fries and wait to hear that the “french fries refill is for FREE”.
CBJ Menu is very rich and it offers a variety for all tastes. So do not worry if you are a vegetarian, a red meat lover or a white meat lover, you will find your request. And for those who count their calories all the day long, CBJ offers you a very tasty Diet Burger (believe me it is very yummy, I’ve tried once).
I find CBJ as one of the best places to enjoy burgers, and I am very happy to know that a Lebanese young man is the owner of this place. Seeing new good running business is always hopeful and pleasant.
CBJ has seven branches in Lebanon: Jal Al Dib, Le Mall Dbayeh, Sodeko, Hamra, Kfardebian, Zaitunay Bay, DT Beirut, and two branches in Kuwait.
If you did not try Classic Burger yet, HURRY UP!
Rating: 5/5
