Did you ever experience  hostility toward something without having a reason? If yes, you will understand exactly my complicated relation with Paris.

Last year, I visited Paris for the first time and I had a great time with my friends. Everything about this city was stunning and striking. Walking down its streets gave me the feeling of travelling in time, every building has a story and every corner is a part of history.

The Eiffel Tower with its lighting and 2.5 million bolts did not fascinate me. I cannot deny its beauty when lighted at night or its perfection in the daylight with the surrounding fountains and lakes. Regardless the inimitability of this Tower, I cannot see how it defines Paris.
Paris, is the city of history. The huge buildings with their captivated architecture stand there witnessing the flow of time, reflecting the greatness of France through ages and creating a poetic atmosphere that leaves you feeling out of space.  It comes a moment when you cannot but wonder: “Is that real?”

The tour on the Seine is one of my best souvenirs there. On its banks, Paris looks so natural and pumps with life. Bridges over the Seine create a wider horizon and the sunlight reflection over the water charms you and leaves you out of words.

This city is beyond beautiful, it looks like it came out of dream. Despite that, I could not love it. Despite all my effort to throw away my prejudgments, to forget that I do not like France or the French language, to enjoy to the maximum this mixture of history and modernity, the bitter taste of eeriness never left me.

When I came back from Paris, I tried to understand what I really did not like about this city and I ended up discovering the truth. I do not hate Paris. I am just jealous of it.

I am jealous because I wish Beirut were not that crowded with cars so I could walk freely in the streets….
I am jealous because I wish Beirut did not have power outages so I could always enjoy its beauty….
I am jealous because I wish Lebanese people were calmer so I won’t have to hear people shouting for the stupidest things.
I am jealous because I wish Lebanese people took care of the environment so we would save the green Lebanon.
I am jealous because I wish Lebanon respected human rights so anyone of us could enjoy his freedom…
I am jealous because my friends went to Paris in order to finish their degrees instead of staying here… I am scared that this city would put them under its spell and they will never come back.

Yes, I despise Paris for all the reasons that make it a better city than Beirut… I despise Paris because every time I remember it I understand how much we are ruining our country… I despise Paris because it reminds me that change comes from revolution, a revolution we are failing to start… I despise Paris for all the reasons that makes it more adorable than Beirut!

Every one of us has in its family or street, a woman who I like to call a "Tante". Although stereotyping people can be unfair, but Lebanese “Tantes”, with all due respect to the individuality of each one of them, have some striking similarities which I'll try to cite.

1- Once she enters a room, a “Tante” is always the center of attention:
saba7o, yih yih, chou 3emle b7alik? Walaw ya tante, chou sayer 3layke?

2- She has an answer to every question you can imagine, because she is an expert in all subjects: cooking, fashion and politics:
la2 ya tante, l mloukhiye ma byeghlouwa hal2ad; hayda l fostan ktir 3al mouda l sene; l wade3 bel balad mano mni7…

3- She is the toughest defender of all the traditions of the society:
3eb, ma bisir ma te3zom eben 3am baya 3al 3eres, hayed mech 3aweyedna…

4- She assists in all the social gatherings (sob7iyet) of the region: breakfasts, brunches, lunches, dinners,etc... and she knows everyone in the neighborhood as well as all the gossips: who died, who got married, and who got a divorce…
Recently, she started using Facebook and Whatsapp to stay up to date and connected to the "Tantes" communities.

5- She always asks you why you are not married yet : "aymata badna nefra7 fike ya tante, ma lezem tkoune ni2a w metalbe"; and she is always willing to introduce you to a decent man which she happens to know: “3ende 3aris la2ta, chab edame w met3allem w 3endo bet…

6- Her kids are the best children ever:
"Foufi yo2borne byetla3 l awal bi safo, smalla chou zake, khewton lal asetze; Mimo ya 3ayne 3laya, betjanen, chatra w zakiye w bta3ref kel chi..."

Bottom of the line, if you failed to imagine what a Lebanese “Tante” looks like, just think of Fadia Al Chereka and you’ll surely be inspired.
If there is an important criteria that I forgot to mention, be kind to share it with us.

I wonder what made you read this article. Which word attracted you more? Sex or Chocolate?
If you are a man, it is very probable that the word Sex is the one that attracted you most but wait to hear that "if you are a woman, the word Chocolate is the one that has more chances to gain your attention ".

According to the results of a survey by Harris Interactive, most french women prefer to eat a gourmet dinner over having sex. 74% of the surveyed women prefer food over sex while only 15% of the surveyed men have this same priority.

A similar survey that targeted British women, ended up concluding that British women prefer Tea over Sex. "Being made a cup of Tea by your partner" is considered as a big romantic sign and it took the 4th place in the list of " things that make you feel appreciated in a relationship". We don't need to guess that British men don't share this same affection like their women, for them tea comes on the 14th place.

This makes me wonder from where this passion of food comes? Do women prefer eating than making love because the pleasure of the first is guaranteed while the succeed of the second depends on their partner? or Do they see food as a tempting target because they pay for it while a small effort can lead them to a "romantic" involvement?

These results reflect the great difference between women and men. This story of different perspectives of life and love that has caused and is still causing a lot of problems.

This is the moment, when we ask ourselves  the same question: " Sex or Food?"

Have you ever heard of Mouna Ayoub?
If no is your answer -which is totally acceptable- then, I can safely say that I didn't know who she was until I read lately that she is selling some fancy items from her Yacht, the Phocea which she purchased in 1997 from Bernard Tapie. This yacht became Mouna's target in 1992 when driven by her admiration to it's appearance, she tried to visit it and the guards forbade her.
Being curious, I was intrigued to know who she was.
Mouna Ayoub is a Lebanese woman who converted to Islam to marry a rich Saudi Arabian Businessman. After 18 years of marriage, she got her divorce and began investing in real estate. She is now a Franco-Lebanese, upper-class, and a collector of haute-couture dresses.
Judging Mouna Ayoub or admiring her is a question to be asked.
The first impression anyone can make about her would be a tough judgement. Marrying someone to get rich is unacceptable in the Lebanese scale of morals (even though it is a common kind of marriage ), So how about a woman who changed also her religion to marry a Saudi man?
She said: "The press in the Middle East never miss an opportunity to describe me as a dishonest woman of loose morals. My husband says I left Saudi Arabia with a fortune that doesn't belong to me. For the sake of my children, I can't let them pour out such venom."

But, let us look at the other face of the story.
A huge number of women get rich by marrying the "Prince-Charmant" , but have you ever heard of all of them?
I bet you didn't!
We can't be sure neither of the details of her private life nor of the kind of life she had is Saudi Arabia. It is not enough to be a beautiful lady and marry a rich man to be "Mouna Ayoub". Building a huge fortune like hers needed time and effort.
In her autobiography "La Vérité" [The Truth], she writes: "People don't understand. They say that I was covered in gold and diamonds and dresses and cars. It's true. But when you are rejected by an entire society, all the wealth of the world would not suffice. I was different to other women in Saudi Arabia and that was my biggest mistake."
This image of the "high -class" bitch that the media tries to deliver can not hide this reality "Whatever was the source of her fortune, She is an intelligent, sophisticated woman with powerful communication skills that earned her international public relations."
