It’s the obvious that this world cup means a lot to Lionel Messi.

After winning everything a football player dreams to win: 4 times the best player in the world, and many European and Spanish competitions his lacking trophy is surely the WC.

During this competition, we have seen the Argentinean struggling to win their games, they had tough games against Netherlands (penalty shots), Iran (1-0 at the last minute), Switzerland (1-0 at the last minute) and Belgium (1-0 because of a defensive fault) and they were on the verge of elimination. I believe their qualification to the final was only due to the football genius Messi and to some good luck.

On the other hand, the Germans also struggled in this world cup especially against Ghana and Algeria. However, they showed a solid team with high technical skills and impressive team spirit.  Their defense was very good in their games against France in the quarter final and against Brazil in the semifinals.

The Myth says that a South American team has always won the WC if was organized on a South American land. But this time, I think the world cup will be for Europeans.

Lebanese reactions to World Cup: Personal conclusions!

Last Friday was the quarter final of the World Cup between Brazil and Columbia, so I went with my sister and some friends to watch the game in Beirut Water Front as we thought it would be a cool place.

When we arrived, and since we didn’t have a reservation in the VIP* part, and because we are not VIP, we bought our “ordinary” tickets and sat with the “ordinary” people at the stadium.

The place is nice, with two big screens, music and food and drinks kiosks, so we assumed that we will have a good time. What we didn’t foresee, was the age of the crowd that we were sitting with: 90% of it was aged between 13 and 20 years; I can safely say that we were the oldest group there.

I don’t need to tell you about how the Lebanese get overexcited during the World Cup, I’m a huge Brazilian fan myself, but what I witnessed Friday was far beyond a football game excitement. It was specimen of our society, of the young generation that will be responsible of our country in the future, and honestly, I was not impressed at all.

A brief description would include the presence of spoiled self-centered teenagers, many of them bragging about their smoking and drinking publicly, with expensive cell phones and cars (for those who are old enough to drive or maybe not), noisy as hell (not only when their team scores) and many of them are rude and disrespectful.

I’m writing this filled with anger and sadness. Surely, my generation is not better than theirs, nor the older generations are better than us; but the ugly truth is that our society is not moving forward, it’s recreating itself from generation to generation, recreating citizens who are only concerned by the trivial. Citizens who burn an obscene number of fireworks if the football team that they cheer for wins a game, and participate in ridiculous convoys  at 2am celebrating the achievement of another country’s football team without any regards to others.

If only we could just stop for a moment and think about our achievements. I’m not denying our right to be happy, but we owe it to ourselves above all, to build a country, a state and a modern society. We owe it to ourselves to care about what is really important for our future, and then maybe someday, we’ll burn fireworks and participate in convoys when we reach the moon or declare the end of corruption in our country.

*As you all know, in Lebanon, either you are a Very Important Person which means that you have a lot of money or willing to lavishly spend the little money that you have or you are a normal persons which is our case.

beIN lawsuit against Télé Liban.

Finally a bit of justice!

The judge of urgent matters Mrs. Zalfa Al Hassan rejected the lawsuit filed by beIN sports against Télé Liban over broadcasting rights, saying the case lacked jurisdiction.

Télé Liban decision of broadcasting the World Cup was a brave step. The director Mr.Talal Makdessi said that "he is willing to sacrifice his job so all the Lebanese would be able to watch the matches".

A huge number of Lebanese have no access to satellite channels especially those who live outside Beirut, Télé Liban is their only chance to watch the games.

My Boyfriend and the World Cup!!!!

Being in love with a man who does not miss any football game, is not as easy as it seems!

To be honest with you, when I began dating him 7 years ago I did not know that his obsession with football would be a problem. I did not know that one day I would become the kind of girls I hate the most. A girl who may start a fight over something as silly as a Football game.

Well, last weekend the Brazil vs Chili match brought the worst out of me.

Let me tell you what happened and please consider the situation far away from your own love to this game.

Last weekend, my boyfriend and I were attending a wedding. He began complaining two days earlier that he would not be able to watch Brazil game (and to make it clear, he is not a Brazilian fan!).

I tried to solve this huge problem the mature way "it is ok 7abibi, you can check the goals on your phone" and guess what he replied "NO, I AM GOING TO WATCH THE GAME LIVE ON MY CELLPHONE!"

If you are wondering if he did it, I am happy to tell you "yes he did". He watched the whole game and when the penalties time came, he just left the party and went to watch the goals in another room!

Today, Argentina, his official team, is playing. I tried to convince him to watch this game together but he did not accept. He wants to be alone. I guess he is afraid I would distract him with my questions and comments :P

Anyway, here I am waiting for the end of this game. Because simply, If Argentina won we will go out, if not I guess he would prefer to stay home and mourn over his great loss :P

Luis Suarez bite: FIFA's Decision!

Two days ago, during the world cup match between Italy and Uruguay, Luis Suarez bit the Italian player Giorgio Chiellini.

FIFA started an investigation on Wednesday to clarify this accident and today Luis Suarez was charged in the biting accident.

Luis Suárez will be suspended for nine matches and banned for four months from any football-related activity

If you watched this game, you would know that FIFA's decision came too late.

Although this decision may look fair and very strict but we all know that it is not fair to the Italian team.
In this same match, the judge committed two big mistakes. First, he gave a red card to "Claudio Marchisio" without a clear reason and second he turned his eyes on  Luis Suarez bite.

I am not an expert on Football Rules, but I have never understood why the judges don't simply use the instant replay!

The integrity of FIFA was always dubious. It is not the first time that a judge mistake changes the fate of a team. This case should raise questions whether this "mistake" was intended or not and how much such "mistakes" could be monitored by FIFA to control the results of the matches.

For months, the World Cup has been in the “top News”. All the newspapers were preoccupied with the preparation and the latest updates of Football. Every small detail, in this huge event, was studied deeply and profoundly. The private sexual life of players was not an exception.

Despite how awkward it may seem, some team managers banned their players from having sex during the world cup.

“We will not be looking for sex or having sex at the World Cup just to have it, we are going to go after what we came for, a competition that gives us the opportunity to rise above and do something really great,” declared Mexican national team coach Miguel Herrera.

Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, who in 2002 imposed a sexual ban over his player, allowed his players to have sex during the 2014 world cup “but no acrobatic stuff.”

Therefore, the question is “how does sex affect athletic performance?

In 2000, the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine published a study titled   “Does Sex the Night Before Competition Decrease Performance?” that ended up concluding that sexual activities had no detrimental influence on physiological capability. However, no clear decision was made regarding  the psychological impact of sex over the players.

The researchers insisted also that a lot depends on the individual: "The performance of some people will improve with sex the night before competition and the performance of others will be hindered”.

Deciding whether to allow or ban sex may be a turning point for the players’ performance. Let us hope that the coaches are taking good decisions for the sake of their teams.

Losing the game did not prevent them from reflecting their beautiful culture and from showing respect for their hosts.

Money buys everything, even the organization of the 2022 World Cup!

On June 1st, The Sunday Times alleged that Mohamed Bin Hammam, the former Qatari vice president of FIFA, has paid millions to ensure support for Qatar’s bid to host the World Cup in 2022.

The decision to award this huge event to Qatar was largely condemned from the start. Situated in the Gulf, Qatar has extreme weather conditions. The summer heat may be unbearable for both, players and fans, and FIFA is taking into consideration the possibility of rescheduling 2022 World Cup to cooler season.

In addition, Qatar was accused of abusing the Nepalese nationals  involved in the World Cup preparations.

“The extent of the risks faced by migrant construction workers building the infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been laid bare by official documents revealing that 185 Nepalese men died last year alone.” Reported The Guardian.

One week ago, Qatar's decision to preserve its culture by imposing a special outfit on its visitors made me wonder if FIFA will regret Qatar’s nomination and consider a change.

Well yes, I would love to attend the World Cup in one of the Arab countries but I cannot turn my eyes away from the huge human costs. I already have my serious problems with the football game and the large amounts of money spent on it. I hope FIFA will not give me more reasons to question the integrity of this game.

I doubt Qatar can host the World Cup. Until now, it didn’t show its intention of  accepting  the culture and the diversity of  its visitors. Besides, it is violating the rights of its workers and paying money so the world would disregard its slips.

For the sake of this game, FIFA should preserve some dignity and call for an investigation to clarify all these buzzes. When rumors are raised about illegal bargains and enormous bribes, we should ask ourselves what Qatar is trying to hide.
